Herman Cember

(01/14/1924 -- 03/06/2009)

Dr Herman
Cember was in the second AEC fellowship class and was a student of Elda Anderson at Oak Ridge. He went on to work at the University of Pittsburgh in the School of Public Health. The health physics classes he taught were the first ones not subsidized by direct government support.  He went on to teach at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio in the School of medicine. Dr Cember left for Northwestern University to teach health physics in the School of Engineering. In 1995 he retired from Northwestern University, and accepted a position at Purdue University. He has served on numerous national and international committees, including working for the United Nations at the ILO. Dr. Cember has recieved multiple awards for teaching and research in his career and  consulted to multiple government agencies.

Thomas E Johnson

Dr. Thomas Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences at Colorado State University. His research efforts are on uranium mining, acute effects of ionizing radiation, the effect of lasers on the skin and cornea and laser safety standards. Prior to attaining his current position, he was an Assistant Professor and Post Doctoral Fellow at the Uniformed Services University. He holds a BS from Southern Illinois University, an MBA from the University of Illinois, an MS in Environmental Engineering from Northwestern University and PhD in Health Physics from Purdue University. He has worked in consulting, electric generating plants, and hospitals. He was a nuclear power plant operator on the fast attack submarine USS Cavalla. He also served as a reservist in the USAF. Additionally, he is a Certified Health Physicist, Certified Laser Safety Officer and Registered Radiation Protection Technologist.
